Citizen science projects have done some remarkable things in recent years and those in astronomy are no exception. Professional astronomers have also taken an interest in Hanny's Voorwerp. This unusually-shaped cloud of gas, which also has another nickname of the "green blob," is located only about 200,000 light years from the galaxy IC 2497. While this sounds like a huge distance, it is actually very close in cosmic terms.

Hanny's Voorwerp, a cloud of gas, is glowing due to radiation from the giant black hole at the center of the galaxy IC 2497. Astronomers think the giant black hole in IC 2497 used to power a quasar in the past, but has faded in the last 200,000 years. IC 2497 is a Barred Spiral Galaxy in the Leo Minor constellation. IC 2497 is situated north of the celestial equator and, as such, it is more easily visible from the northern hemisphere.

We present new Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) observations of the core of IC 2497, the galaxy associated with Hanny's Voorwerp. The combined fits of the Chandra (0.5-8 keV) and NuSTAR (3-24 keV) X-ray spectra, together with WISE mid-IR photometry, optical longslit spectroscopy and optical narrow-band imaging, suggest that the galaxy 2012-06-17 · We present Hubble Space Telescope imaging and spectroscopy for the extended high-ionization cloud known as Hanny's Voorwerp, near the spiral galaxy IC 2497. WFC3 images show complex dust absorption near the nucleus of IC 2497. STIS spectra show a type 2 Seyfert AGN of rather low luminosity.
